Paola & Addolorata

Paola is where the south of Malta plugs into the national network: the roads from Żejtun, Tarxien, Fgura and the Three Cities all meet the Marsa and airport corridors here. Paola Square — recently repaved and reorganised — is the visible centre, but the load-bearing junctions are the approaches around it and the Addolorata circle on the town's rim.

The morning pattern is strongly directional: the south empties through Paola towards Marsa between 07:00 and 09:00, and the evening reverses it. Against-flow journeys — into the south in the morning, out in the evening — remain easy at the exact times the with-flow direction crawls.

Paola borders the Addolorata Cemetery, Malta's national burial ground, and the cemetery's calendar is a real traffic factor that outsiders never anticipate. Funerals add short, sharp closures on the approach circle almost daily; the first days of November — All Saints and All Souls — bring the year's peak, when visiting families fill every road and verge around the cemetery for two days straight.

If you commute through Paola, the early November pattern is worth marking in the calendar, and any morning with an unusually slow Addolorata circle usually resolves to a large funeral rather than an incident.

On its harbour side, Paola fronts the Kordin industrial area and the docks — a second traffic system of trucks, correctional-facility staff shifts and port movements that runs on its own clock. The Kordin roads carry surprising volume at shift changes and almost none in between.

This side of town also provides the useful back route to the Three Cities, dropping to the waterfront away from the main Cospicua approach. On event days at the Grand Harbour — regattas, ship visits, fireworks festivals — that back route is the difference between arriving and sitting in the single queue everyone else found first.
