The Malta Traffic Index is a single 1–100 figure describing how much slower the island's main network is running compared with free-flow conditions. It combines the weighted Travel Time Index across a fixed panel of monitoring points on motorway, primary and secondary roads with the proportion of those points currently slowed or closed. An index of 10 means the network is close to empty; 50 means journeys on the main corridors are taking substantially longer than they would at night.

Each report covers a completed Monday-to-Sunday week and is built only from readings actually recorded in that week. Nothing is modelled or interpolated: where coverage was thin, the report says so, and a week without enough readings to characterise fairly is not published at all. Because the sampler runs on live site usage rather than a fixed schedule, overnight coverage is naturally lighter than daytime coverage.
