Malta International Airport sits in Luqa, and almost every airport journey funnels through two corridors: the Marsa–Luqa link (Triq Garibaldi / Vjal l-Avjazzjoni) from the north, and Triq Ħal Far from the south-east. Both run smoothly off-peak but can add 15–25 minutes during the 07:00–09:00 and 16:30–19:00 rush.
Use the live map below to check the airport approach before you leave — congestion at the Marsa junction or on Vjal l-Avjazzjoni is the most common cause of missed check-ins. The traffic index in the corner gives you an instant island-wide read.
Departures drop-off and the short-stay car park rarely queue, but the roundabout at the airport entrance (Vjal l-Avjazzjoni) backs up when arrivals peak in summer evenings. Allow extra margin on Friday and Sunday evenings, the busiest flight banks of the week.

Parking
The airport has short-stay (P1/P2, next to the terminal) and long-stay (P4/P5, 5–8 minutes' walk or shuttle) car parks — pre-booking online is meaningfully cheaper in summer. The drop-off lane in front of departures gives you 10 free minutes.
Street parking in Luqa village is unrestricted but tight; don't rely on it for catching a flight.

Public transport alternatives
Bus X4 links the airport to Valletta, and TD2/TD3 express routes serve Sliema/St Julian's — every 20–30 minutes in season. Buses use the same congested roads as cars, so allow the same traffic margin.
A taxi or Bolt/eCabs from Sliema runs €15–25 and 20–40 minutes depending on traffic; fixed-price white taxis from the terminal use a zone tariff board.

Off-peak, most of Malta is within 20–30 minutes of the airport. During weekday rush (07:00–09:00, 16:30–19:00) add 20 minutes if you're coming from Sliema, St Julian's or the north — the Marsa junction is the usual bottleneck. Check the live map before setting off.
The departures drop-off itself rarely queues for more than a couple of minutes. The delays happen earlier, on Vjal l-Avjazzjoni and at Marsa — not at the terminal.
Regional Road → Santa Venera tunnels → Marsa–Ħamrun bypass → Vjal l-Avjazzjoni is the default. If the live map shows Marsa jammed, the Birkirkara–Qormi route via Triq l-Imdina is the usual escape valve.
