About Malta Traffic
Malta Traffic is a free, real-time road-conditions map for Malta and Gozo. We combine live traffic flow, incident reports and street cameras into a single, fast page — so you can decide between the coast road and the bypass before you leave the driveway.
Data sources
- TomTom — Flow tiles, incidents (Transport Malta feed), and segment data. Refresh: ~2 minutes.
- SkylineWebcams — Public street cameras across Malta's busiest junctions. Refresh: ~10 seconds.
- Transport Malta — Authoritative road-closure and event data, flowing through TomTom's incident feed.
Coverage
All of Malta and Gozo. We surface dedicated location pages for the busiest areas — Valletta, Sliema, St Julian's, Msida, Marsa, Mosta, Birkirkara, Mdina and Gozo — plus a directory of all live cameras.
FAQ
How often is the traffic data updated?
Traffic flow tiles refresh every 2 minutes, matching TomTom's underlying refresh rate. Incident data refreshes on every page load and at 60-second intervals. Camera snapshots refresh every 10 seconds.
Where does the traffic data come from?
Live road flow and incidents are sourced from the TomTom Traffic API — the same data behind many in-car navigation systems. Camera snapshots come from SkylineWebcams' public Malta network.
Is Malta Traffic free?
Yes — the site is free to use, with no registration required. We display ads (via Google AdSense) and accept optional support via Buy Me a Coffee to cover hosting and API costs.
Does Malta Traffic cover Gozo?
Yes. Flow and incidents are covered for both islands, and we surface the Ċirkewwa Ferry Terminal camera as a live indicator of the Malta-Gozo crossing queue.
Why don't I see all roads on the map?
Flow tiles cover primary and secondary roads. Very small residential streets aren't typically monitored by TomTom's probe-vehicle network — those rely on Google's larger dataset.
Can I report an incident?
Not yet — user-generated reporting (Waze-style) is on our roadmap. For now, all incident data is sourced from Transport Malta via TomTom.
How accurate are the traffic colours?
Green = free flow at the road's normal speed. Yellow = slower than normal. Orange = significantly slower. Red = heavy congestion. Dark red = blocked or closed. Calibration is relative to each road's typical speed, so 'red' on a 50 km/h road is different from 'red' on a 30 km/h road.
What's the 'Congestion Index'?
A single number (0–100) summarising how slow Malta's main road network is right now, compared to free-flow conditions. Calculated from a sample of representative road segments via the TomTom Flow Segment Data API.
Is my data being tracked?
We use Google Analytics for aggregate visitor stats. We do not require registration or store personal data. See our privacy policy for details.
Who runs Malta Traffic?
An independent developer based in Malta, frustrated by the daily Marsa-bound commute. Feedback is welcome — see the support button on the live map.
