Parking
Mellieħa Bay has large but summer-saturated car parks — full by 10:00 on August weekends. The village has unmarked street parking; for the ferry, Ċirkewwa's car park fills on holiday weekends, so foot passengers should be dropped off early.

Routes 41/42/X1 run the Valletta–Ċirkewwa spine through Mellieħa; the X1 links the airport directly to the ferry. Buses share the single corridor, so ferry-day delays hit them equally.

Mellieħa is built on a ridge with its beach at the bottom of the hill, and the main road ties the two together in a series of climbs and hairpin-adjacent bends. Every vehicle heading to Ċirkewwa and Gozo passes below the town along Għadira Bay — which is also where Malta's largest sandy beach puts its car park.
That combination is the whole story: on summer weekends, beach parking overflow, ferry traffic and the town's own movements all share the bay road. The Sunday-evening southbound return — beach crowd plus ferry pulse together — is the north's signature queue, visible in advance on the Ċirkewwa camera.
Living above, parking below
The town centre on the ridge has the usual village-core parking pressure, sharpened by tourism: restaurants along the main street draw evening visitors year-round, and the viewpoint by the church collects coaches. Locals park in the grid of residential streets behind the main road; visitors circling the main street itself rarely find anything after 19:00 in season.
For the beach, the calculus is simpler — the Għadira car parks fill by late morning in July and August, and the informal verge parking along the bay fills right after. Arriving before 09:30 or after 16:00 is the entire strategy.
Where the island runs out of road
Beyond Mellieħa the network simplifies to one line: the road over Marfa Ridge to Ċirkewwa, with side spurs to Armier and the Red Tower. There is no alternative route, so anything that blocks it — an incident, a breakdown on the descent, ferry overflow — cuts the Gozo connection outright until cleared.
This is the one corridor where checking conditions before leaving home genuinely changes decisions: with the Ċirkewwa frame showing a marshalling area already full and the flow map red over Xemxija, delaying departure by two hours beats queuing for two hours — the pulse always passes.
